What to Look for in a Submersible Water Pump

Submersible Trash Pump

Submersible water pumps are among the most popular types of pumps available today. Because there are so many kinds of submersible pumps on the market, how do you choose one for the right application? There are different types of submersible pumps, so understanding the differences can help you choose the right type for your needs.

Benefits of Submersible Water Pumps

Submersible water pumps are characterized by the fact that they do not suffer from air leaks. With a deep well pump, you don’t have to worry about priming the pump, as the entire pump runs underwater. As with above-water pumps, submersible pumps are highly efficient and do not overheat.

Other than submersible pumps used for permanent applications like pond pumps or deep well pumps, smaller submersible utility pumps are portable and lightweight as well, making them extremely convenient to use in difficult-to-reach areas or small spaces like window wells.

Types of Submersible Water Pumps

  • Submersible Utility Pumps- These are used to remove standing water, drain clogged sinks, and empty window wells, amongst other things. One of the most important factors to consider in choosing a utility pump is portability. In small spaces, utility pumps are the best option because other water pumps can’t fit. You can determine the speed of water flow through the pump based on the size of its inlet. The utility pump with a float switch is also a good option because it automatically turns the pump on and off when the water level changes, so you don’t have to keep an eye on it. As long as the water doesn’t contain debris or solids, utility pumps are perfect for urgent and semi-regular pumping applications. Use a utility pump for cleaning dirty water without solids, but do not use it to pump sewage.
  • Submersible Trash Pumps- An alternative type of portable pump, submersible trash pumps are great because they can be operated by simply attaching a hose to it and dropping it in. You will need a submersible trash pump if your sump pump fails or you experience flooding with sand, leaves, or other debris in the water. Pumps with heavy-duty impellers expel water and debris through larger inlets, hoses, and outlets than others. In addition to being more expensive, these pumps are also necessary if you need to remove dirty water quickly from small or large areas.
  • Pool Cover Pumps – These pumps are pretty simple to use; just plug them in, attach your hose, and set on your cover to watch them work. Utility pumps are sometimes confused with these pumps, which makes sense since they are sometimes used for removing water from pool covers, too.
  • Pond Pumps – The right pond and fountain pumps can make your yard the envy of the neighborhood quickly. There are a variety of uses for pond and fountain pumps. These pumps can be used to power waterfalls and small streams on your property, and they can also be used in aquariums. Pond pumps sometimes come with a dual discharge option, which allows it to serve two water features at once, which is more convenient than installing separate pumps for each water feature. Generally, fountain and pond pumps are quiet and rated for continuous operation, so as long as they are plugged in, they will work. Make sure the pump is oil-free if you plan to use it in a pond with fish.
  • Submersible Well Pumps – Submersible pumps with control boxes offer all the benefits above, as well as a built-in check valve that maintains pressure and prevents backflow. Due to the fact that these pumps are sealed and used underwater, they are virtually maintenance-free and corrosion-resistant. Deep well pumps can deliver water from 15′ to 25′ and even over 500′ in some cases, making them the best choice for narrow or deep wells. Ensure you choose the right pump size and two- or three-wire configuration for the application.
